Why attend this conference?

Conference overview

The conference is based on the principles of the Neurodiversity Support Initiative advocated by Northeastern University College of Engineering. This is a kickoff hybrid (in person/asynchronous) conference as a precursor to the development of a “Northeastern Regional Higher Education Neurodiversity Coalition” (NEHENC) through which higher education scholars and practitioners can gather as a community to explore and share best practices on how to improve educational and professional outcomes for Neurodivergent Engineering Students. The conference will allow participants to receive training and gain an understanding of neurodiversity, before delving into specific sessions.

Broader Impacts

The conference is both timely and relevant, as the neurodiverse population continues to grow on campus with estimates ranging from 20-40%[i], based on population representation. Students who identify as neurodivergent experience higher drop-out rates[ii], lower academic performance[iii], and lower employment retention rates[iv] after graduation than the general population. Northeastern has recently joined a small cohort of universities nationally with initiatives in neurodiversity (e.g. Vanderbilt, UConn). Northeastern is ranked #1 for co-op/internships among all universities in the country (U.S. News and World Report, 2024).  This confluence of neurodiversity with strong experiential learning places Northeastern well to initiate this dialogue, at the nexus of higher education and corporate partners.
